Purple Orchid Trapunto
Designed and quilted by Sandy Sturgis
Finished Size: 24" H x 23" W
The green inner border, and purple
outer border emphasize the leaf & flower colors. Sandy quilted
the outline of the floral design, quilted lines through several
of the long leaves giving a veined appearance, and then quilted
a grid background, leaving the flowers themselves unquilted.
This gives the flowers a very attractive trapunto look. This
can be achieved with any of the beautiful flower batiks, as
well as other batik designs.

Kokopeli Goes Hmong
Designed and pieced by Cathy Scovill
Finished Size: 21" H x 21" W
Kokopeli goes Hmong is pieced, not quilted, as
yet. This stunning creation incorporates the SW Kokopeli mini
pieces with Hmong reverse appliqué. The blocks are simply
pieced by trimming the mini blocks the same size as the Hmong
blocks, and alternating them. Bring the mini blocks out into the
corners with straight sashing. The black sashing intensifies the
colors in the piece. Adding black to inner and outer borders using
batiks, intensifies the colors tremendously.

At The Edge Of The Pond
Designed and Machine Quilted by Sandy Sturgis
Finished Size: 46" H x 45" W
At The Edge Of The Pond was created
by Sandy Sturgis in an Easy Pieces Class taught by Margaret Mitchell.
The bubble fish batik is set off center among easy pieced blocks
to give the piece more interest. The machine quilting and embellishment
is exceptional. There is a water level with fish swimming, a surface
level with lily pads and jumping frogs, and an air level with
birds and butterflies. A branch comes over the top and there are
cattails in the foreground. Sandy won first place in machine quilting
with her original piece (done in blues) at the 2002 Gulf Coast
Quilt Expo.
